Buttons work sometimes, sometimes not. Flash red.

Purchased a hub and 3 buttons a few years ago. My first experience wasn't great, so kind of let them lie until now. Thought I'd try to incorporate them in my Homekit setup again.
Seemed promising at first. The button would turn the lamps on as they're supposed to. Next day. Buttons display red lights. Next day they work again. Today they don't.
Hub is up to date and connected via ethernet. Since that wasn't working, tried connecting via Wifi. Still the same problems. I don't why this is so hard. It almost seems like I don't have the same product I read about on the Flic web page.
What is the most likely cause of this? I really need something that works reliably.

@steve-2 Do you have Flic 1st generation buttons or Flic 2? They have different number of LED colours and behave differently.
On Flic 2, the button will blink two short red blinks when pressed and connected if the battery voltage is low, in that case please try to insert a newer battery.
